The unemployed persons of Marienthal. A soziographischer attempt over the effects of long-continuous unemployment. (1933) the title of a sociological classical author of Marie Jahoda, Paul Felix Lazarsfeld and Hans Zeisel is for the investigation of the consequences of unemployment.

Today the project implemented by a team around Marie Jahoda and Paul Lazarsfeld around would be called "Action research" (see also: "Participating observation") and as an example of the theory formation in combination of quantitative and qualitative data, found data and raised data serve. Even if these concepts are younger than the work over the unemployed persons of Marienthal, - under the term "Soziographie" - milestones for these methods were set here.

Why "action Marienthal is a place in the proximity of Vienna. After the locking of a factory, after whose start-up the municipality had been created, suddenly extensive unemployment developed. In order to win entrance to humans in Marienthal, the authors of this study looked for not only contact to political and social groups and associations, but also accomplished dress collections, medical consulting hours, educating consultation, turn and indication courses. A goal was it to win humans for the research project. At the same time everyone of these means (the inclusive consulting hours ethicalally doubtful in this regard) served also to attain by participating observation information about the Marienthaler population.

For each family in Marienthal land register sheets were put on, on which the different observations and interviews were held, by the tidy or unordered condition of the dwelling with the attendance because of the dress collection up to things, which were discussed during the educating consultation, with the physician attendance or with the observation in the "worker home". About thirty detailed interviews were led, some journals over the timing were made and to meal lists provided. The official statistics was consulted likewise.

The published result of the study gives a broad and deep overview of the life with the form at that time of unemployment benefit, without imminent chance for occupation. In particular one after-draws, as due to the hopelesness by unemployment the Zeitbuget changes. If actually a task were to be fulfilled, it is let lie nevertheless. The timing, the firm raster is missing.

The unemployed persons of Marienthal is however not only one with many examples illustrated descriptive representation, but also theory screen end a work.

Thus Jahoda develop et al. four categories of the "attitude", in which the Marienthaler families can be arranged:

• "Unbroken ones", which clear-come further with their life
• "Resigned", which continue to live outwardly as before, but resigned from the attitude
• , Changes also here the life change, so far with the small means possible, "despaired" hardly, the attitude however substantially
• "Apathetic one", here shows up safe-keeping draw, which disappears to interest in the receipt of an arranged life.

The book becomes by a "Vorspruch" added into the 1950er years from Lazarsfeld, in which it arranges the work in its relation to schools at that time and contemporary of the sociology, and a methodical appendix to the Soziographie supplements.
