A misfortune is an unexpected damage event without background of terror or criminal with damages to property and/or person by technical and/or human failure. Examples for this are traffic accidents or industrial accidents.

A particularly consequence-fraught misfortune becomes as large damage event (gSE) or as disaster designated. Examples for this are aircraft crashes, large explosions, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.

For gSE the high number of killed persons is typical, e.g. sea-quake in south Asia on 26 December 2004 with 230.000 had an accident, sees also earthquakes in the Indian ocean 2004.
