The general association of the German insurance economy (GDV) is the controlling body of the insurance companies in Germany.

The GDV was created 1948; today's seat is Berlin. To the federation 455 insurance companies belong as members. President of the GDV is Dr. Bernhard Schareck (since 2003).

Task of the GDV is the agency of the interests of its members, thus the German insurance companies, in relation to political institutions (lobbyism). Beyond that it possesses an advisory function (Neokorporatismus) for the policy.

For the adjustment of traffic accidents (notice of loss) the GDV furnished a central call. The moreover the GDV maintains a subsidiary for hazard prevention, the VdS hazard prevention GmbH.

Historical development

After in the German insurance economy first several professional associations had existed next to each other, first 1995 a union of the individual professional associations took place damage-insure for the federation of the special insurers. This was however only one stopover, that already 1996 took place a union federation of the special insurers as well as the federation of the life insurers to the general association of the German insurance economy.

From the departments of the VdS technical in Cologne resident, which had been created as and from the VdS to specialized divisions for fire protection and break-down theft protection had been developed, thereby the establishment of the VdS hazard prevention GmbH came.
