Disablement has two meanings:

  • A person, who invalid is, thus serving or work-unable, due to illness or physical defect.
  • furthermore: "Invalid", "not truely", thus the opposite of valide.

Origin of the word:

The word Invalid originates from the French and (in the Middle Ages) for the wounded ones (Les Invalides, invalid cathedral) was used, on latin invalidus (=kraftlos, weakly, void) decreases/goes back. In 18. Century used one invalid for soldier unfit for service and or retired and in 19. Century was then verdeutscht there it (for the Renaissance French the mode language of elevated societies was).

As an employee one is generally insured in Germany against disablement. The invalidity insurance is called since the pension reform of 1957 however worker old age pension insurance

Very often one wants to address disablement" the topic handicap with the term "invalid" and/or ". Due to the word origin and latin translation as "invalidly" feel it ever more obstructed as discriminating to be able to be called than invalid and/or invalid. Therefore one should use the terms instead of its "handicapped" and/or "handicap".
