The term collapse designates the sudden transition of a system of a certain condition to another, not neighbouring condition (i.e. the subsequent condition differs substantially from the initial condition). This transition is also unexpected and/or irreversible mostly. The term is used often also synonymously for the collapse.
In German the collapse can refer both to material objects (collapse of a building), to social or political structures (collapse of a state) or also to an individual individual (Nervenzusammenbruch).
In the post-war period after 1945 the end of the "third realm" was called mostly "collapse", while expressions for it were completely uncommon like "release" outside of the phraseology of the GDR.
