An average (of Arab awar "„error, damage "“) is a case of loss usually in connection with a vessel, with which the vehicle and mostly also the carried commodity in substantial way in are pulled. In extreme cases vehicle and commodity go down. Both as the vehicle come to damage and its owner and/or its passengers are designated Havarist (EN). In the case, if the ship must temporarily interrupt the journey by fire, collision or machine damage for the damage of the Befrachters, one speaks insurance-moderately of an average large. The term average is used also for accidents within the reactor range by nuclear power stations. The average is mostly the result of an emergency situation, about a distress, which could not be only partly turned away or. In Germany there are average adjusters, who examine traffic accidents in the traffic with large extent of the damage. Particularly in Austria one speaks also in the traffic with damaged vehicles, particularly in the case of total losses, of suffered average vehicles or averages.

In the media the term average is used also for damage or at or in industrial plants, buildings etc. It became in the meantime a synonym for an accident of larger extent or with larger damages.

Occasionally one speaks also - without foundation - with colliding celestial objects of an average.

Maritime law

In the maritime law distinctive between the events large average, small average and special average.

Large average

covered and describes damage, which is deliberately added to the ship or its charge to the purpose of their rescue by the boat operator (usually captain) or on its arrangement. That sounds first paradoxical, but can consist e.g. the rescue of a ship and its charge of throwing parts of the charge over board (e.g. with inclination). Fire fighting with fires in the loading space, in order to avoid further charge damage.

In case of a large average form the shipowner (the shipowner) and the prospective customers, i.e. the owners of the charge, a damage community. The damage is divided proportionately on all involved ones.

Small average

covered and describes usual and unusual costs of the navigation (pilot funds, harbour dues, beacon money, towing dues, costs of quarantine and Auseisung etc.)

Special average

covered and everything describes caused damage and costs, which do not belong to the large average by an accident and to the freight represent no additional expenses (particular AVERAGEs). For assessment of damages average adjusters (Surveyor) are mostly used.
