The artist social security (KSV) is part of the legal social security.

Legal basis is the law over the social security of the independent artists and journalist (artist social security law - KSVG) from 27 July 1981 (BGBl. I P. 705), which for the first time includes the independent artists and journalists pflichtweise to 1 January 1983 in the legal ill, maintaining and old age pension insurance, as far as they obtain a minimum income from this acquisition-moderate and only temporarily not exercised activity, employ no more than one employee and not otherwise are released from the liability to insure. Also sideline artists, who refer their predominant income from other one principal activity, are excluded. Artist is, who creates or teaches music, representing or screen end art; Journalist is, who as a writer, journalist is active or in other way journalistic or journalism teaches.

The achievements from the KSV are furnished by the respective insurers (health insurance companies, Federal Social Insurance Institution for employees) after the respective right of the legal pension and/or ill and nursing care insurance.

For the insurance assessment and collection of contributions the artist social insurance is responsible. The artist social insurance is a dependent, however a household and fortune moderate separated mechanism, which is in integrated as special department into the accident cash of the federation. Seat of the artist social insurance and the accident cash of the federation are Wilhelmshaven.

A substantial characteristic opposite other independent ones included into the social security exists in the kind of the financing of the KSV: The financial requirement is applied (only) to the half from contributions of the insured ones; "the worth carry the other contribution half "from artistic achievements in form of the overall put down "artist social security contribution "(which amounts to at present 5.5% of all incomes of an artist), together with a subsidy of the federation. The constitutionality of this financing construction singular in the social security confirmed the Federal Constitutional Court in its resolution from 8 April 1987.
